Go West, Young Woman!

Successfully arrived in Des Moines for the night. I now have an immense respect for other students who have done this, because it’s a lot scarier than some people think. Leaving your home by yourself to go someplace you’ve never gone before to work with people you’ve never met….for 7 weeks!! Golly, I can’t imagine doing this internationally. I said goodbye to my family yesterday afternoon (they went south for grad parties) so I didn’t sleep too well with the house being empty and all. The people at church this morning were really helpful and prayed that making the drive would be safe and simple for me. Such support from my dear friends was very encouraging. Packing my car by myself and saying goodbye to the farm was not fun or easy, but about the time I hit the interstate and the butterflies really started going crazy, somebody on the radio mentioned Deuteronomy 31:8.

It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you;
He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

    Needless to say, this verse was my motivation today. It really helped make the drive a lot easier. So did the added musical talents of Huey Lewis and the News, Journey, and the Steve Miller Band. Now that I’ve got a full day of driving behind me, I feel a lot better. Actually looking forward to finally arriving in South Dakota tomorrow.
    In closing, I’d like to give a shout out to all the Red, White, and Blue I saw on the road today. Since it’s Memorial Day weekend, there were flags hanging at almost every exit car dealership and back road cemetery…even the construction guys had a flag hanging from their cranes. Pretty cool. I’m really thankful for my dear friends in the service, especially Dalton Schunke and Jed Tabor, as well as all the others that have devoted themselves to making my life in the U.S., my education, and this mentorship a reality. I know that they have left their families and homes so that I can have the best education in the world. You all have my deepest gratitude and my sincere respect.
